Shortage Of Labor At Tea Gardens in Ilam
By KTM Metro Reporter
December 30, 2013: Tea gardens are facing the shortage of laborers due to the Nepalis opting for the foreign employment; unlike in the past, currently, local laborers are hard to find even though a laborer could earn more than Rs. 10,000 per month working at tea gardens, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’
Demand for Laborers has increased fast after almost each house started a tea garden in the eastern part of the Ilam district. The district has some 8,000 tea farmers.
In the past, laborers were working for lodging and food but now we can not find even paying proper remuneration, says Netra Pokhrel of Kanyam.
We cannot find manpower even if better benefits are provided, says Kajiman Kagate, a resident of Kanyam. Now, we have been searching for workers with a slogan 'go to the east if you need job.'
Sharmila Rai of Fikkal says she is called from many places and cannot reach everywhere. Gyanu Rai of Panchakanya started off working herself on her 50 ropanis of tea farming.
The shortage of labor has not only hit the private tea gardens but also the state-run ‘Nepal Tea Development Corporation’.
