January 19, 2011: at the meeting held at Singha Durbar, officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda have decided to bring the Maoist combatants and their weapons under the Army Integration Special Committee (AISC) on January 22, and to hold a special program on formally turning over the combatants and the weapons to AISC at the Shaktikhor cantonment in Chitwan according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today. They have also agreed on setting up a six-member team to monitor the combatants and weapons following the agreement reached between the government and the UCPN-Maoist on Friday, January 14, 2011, Prime Minister’s advisor Bishnu Rijal has said. Chairman Prachanda has shown his concern about the news that the government is importing weapons from India but officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has assured Chairman Prachanda of the government not importing any weapons from India.

At the same time, ‘The Himalayan Times’ online today reports that Chief of Army Staff Chhatra Man Singh Gurung has conveyed the message to officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal that the umbrella of the Special Committee set up for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of Maoist PLA combatants cannot cover the Nepal Army.

The UCPN-Maoist leaders have warned that the turnover of the Maoist cantonments to the Special Committee scheduled for Saturday, January 22 will not be held if the government does not follow the three-point agreement the government and the UCPN-Maoist have reached on January 14, 2011 not bringing the Nepal Army under the monitoring purview of the Special Committee, and importing arms from India, myrepublica.com reports.
