By KTM Metro Reporter

November 26, 2010: hearing on a petition filed by advocates Sarojnath Pyakurel, Rishiram Ghimire, Sadhya Bahadur Bhandari and Tara Prasad Lamichhane to annul the decision of the Election Commission (EC) on issuing voters’ ID cards based on the documents other than citizenship certificates, a single bench of justice Prakash Wasti has ruled on November 25, 2010 that the government and the EC should not honor any other documents other than the citizenship certificates for issuing voters’ cards. The EC has relented to the threat of the Madheshi political parties to launch a movement if the EC issues voters cards based on only the citizenship certificate, and has decided to issue voters’ ID cards based o others certificates of residents, nepalnews.com writes.

Speaking at an interaction in Kathmandu on Friday, November 26, Chairman of the Nepal Sadbhawana Party holding the office of Supply Minister Rajendra Mahato referring to the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nepal on the distribution of voters’ ID cards has said, "There is no provision in the constitution that those who don't have citizenship certificates cannot be on the voter list. There are people who have not got citizenship certificates but still Nepali citizens," nepalnews.com quotes the minister. However, the minister has failed in saying why those Nepalese citizens have not received citizenship certificates.
