Scholarship For Poor Students Stopped
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
The Government headed by Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has stopped the scholarships given to the poor students of the most backward community called Chepang in Nepal according to the news report of the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of November 25, 2009. About 22, 000 Chepang students will be directly and adversely affected by the government’s decision on not providing Chepang with scholarship according to the Nepal Chepang Association. The government has stopped the scholarship on the pretext of the government providing all Nepalis with free education up to the secondary level. Chenpangs belong to one of the poorest communities. Most of them survive on collecting wild roots at the nearby forest. Most of men wear only loin clothes, and women only petticoats only even during the winter season because of poverty.
