Indian PM’s Visit to China

Issue 03, January 20, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited China in the third week of September 2008 to further improve the strained relations between the two countries. After the war between the two countries in 1962, the relations had been always tense. In addition, the two countries have the border dispute continuing even today. However, a few weeks ago they held a joint military exercise. They have been doing business well. They want to increase the business from $34 billion to $40 billion by 2010

While in China, Indian Prime Minister endorsed the one-China policy. Tibetans living in exile and home protested it. However, the Indian Government continued to let Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama run his government in exile in Dharamsala, India. The Dalai Lama wants to have at least autonomy in his home-country Tibet. He has been in exile in India since the Tibetan people’s uprising against the Chinese rule in 1959. China continued to rule Tibet with an iron hand. The Chinese leaders labeled the Dalai Lama as a separatist.
