Defense Ministry’ Concern for PLA’s Recruitment Attempt

Issue 32, August 08, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 4, 2010: in a statement issued in Kathmandu, the Ministry of Defense has strongly opposed the People’s Liberation Army’s fresh recruitment drive following the Nepali Army’s fresh recruitment, as it will complicate the security management. However, the Defense Ministry’s statement says that Nepali Army will not back track from the fresh recruitment of soldiers.

UNMIN has stated that the fresh recruitment of soldiers called by both the PLA and the Nepal army goes against the Comprehensive Peace Agreement the Government of Nepal has reached with the then CPN-Maoist in 2006. UNMIN says that they need to refer the new recruitment to the Joint Monitoring Coordination Committee (JMCC) comprising the members of Nepal Army and the Maoist army, and chaired by UNMIN. JMCC is responsible for supervising compliance by the parties with the Agreement on the Monitoring of the Management of Arms and Armies (AMMAA).
