Redefining Relations Between Nepal And India

Issue 40, October 2, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 26, 2011: speaking at the function held by Nepal-India Human Development and Friendly Association in Kathmandu yesterday, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has said that bilateral relations between Nepal and India should be redefined in a new term, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

This is not the first time Prachanda has said so but nothing has been done to this end. Authorities of the Indian external ministry have come forward with the proposal for redefining the Nepal-India Treaty of 1950 but the Nepalese authorities have done nothing so far. Possibly, these Nepalese guys talking about the need for rewriting the treaty between Nepal and India don’t know what they really want. Why Prachanda has been talking about it also is the subject for investigation.

Speaking at the same forum, Prachanda has appreciated the Indian support for bringing the democratic forces and the Maoists together to reach the 12-point deal between them. He has said that Nepal expects similar cooperation from India on completing the peace process and promulgating a new constitution. However, he has been quick to point out that Nepal does not want interferences in the Nepalese affairs in the name of cooperation.

Speaking at the same function, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Jayanta Prasad has said that India has been ready to define Nepal-India relations in a new way. The ambassador has also said that the relations between Nepal and India are unique, the welfare of Nepalis is in the interest of India; so, India wants to assist Nepal in its development.
