Appointment Of Chief Election Commissioner And Other Commissioners

March 24, 2013: the Constitutional Council has replied to the letter sent by the office of the president questioning whether the reappointment of the three former election commissioners including the chief election commissioner would be following the Article 128 (3) & (7), stating the appointment of the chief election commissioner and other two election commissioners are following the constitution, and the president could appoint them immediately to make the elections possible as scheduled, according to the news on ‘Gorkhapatraonline.com’ of today.

The Constitutional Council had recommended the names of three former election commissioners for their reappointment and two new election commissioners. The office of the president had no questions concerning the two new appointees but has sent a letter questioning about the reappointment of three former commissioners on Friday March 22, 2013.

The ‘High-level Political Committee’ of UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and UDMF had recommended the five names including the names of three former election commissioners to appoint to the Election Commission. Following the recommendations of the committee, the Constitutional Council had forwarded the recommendation to the president for appointment.

If the President is convinced of the recommendations are constitutional, then the president might appoint them to the Election Commission today. Chairman of the Constitutional Council Khil Raj Regmi had met with the president, and explained to the president the recommendations are in fact made following the constitution, according to ‘Gorkhapataonline.com news of today.
