Naga Pancami, And Changing Sacred Thread

KTM Metro Reporter

July 28, 2017

Kathmandu:

Naga Pancami: Today is the fifth day of the bright fortnight in the month called Sravon (July-August) in the Vikram calendar: the day of Naga deity that preserves the dignity of home preventing any evil spirits entering a home, and averting any lighting hitting a home. So, all the believers post papers prints of different sorts of Naga deities on the front doors of houses.

Religious festivals are held in Naga Pokharai in Kathmandu, and Taudaha Lake on the way to Dakshinkali, and other palaces to revere the Naga deities. Devotees offer milk, auspicious grass “dubo”, buckwheat and sesame seeds, and a butter lamp, and burning incense sticks.

Changing Sacred Thread: Hindus change the sacred thread for a year. They discard the old ones and wear new ones today. Actually, it was done on the full moon day of Sravon but this year the full moon day has an eclipse means not auspicious day to perform such holy rituals. So, they have to do on this day, the second most holy day to perform such things.

The sacred thread carries the Hindu Trinity. So, anybody wearing such a sacred thread does not lie, does not commit any evils, and strictly follow the food code, sex code, and so on. However, these things have been the things of the past.

If some of the sacred thread wearing folks particularly the politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen and so on follow the principles of the sacred thread then Nepal would have been the most developed country in the world. That has been the wishful thinking, now. Those guys would not cause revenue loss of billions of rupees in waiving taxes, in diverting the electric energy from the common folks to a few industries, in causing cost overrun and time overrun to the large projects. In fact, nobody would be tainted with corruption.
