Continuation of Declaring Autonomous Republics

Issue 51, December 20, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 16, 2009, speaking at the mass rally held at Basantapur in Kathmandu, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda declared a Nevah Autonomous Republic comprising three districts such as Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Chairman Prachanda has said that the declaration of autonomous federal republics is for the publicity to orient the people to the federalism and enhance their awareness of the federalism. He also has warned that his party would turn such autonomous republics into a parallel government if a conspiracy to do away with federalism, peace and constitution drafting processes goes on and impair the historic achievement of the Nepalese people.

At the same time, speaking at the mass rally held at Kakani of Nuwakot district, one of Deputy Chairmen of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai declared a Tamsaling Autonomous Republic comprising 10 districts such as Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Ramechap, Dolkha, Chitwan, Makwanpur and Sindhuli.

Deputy Chairman Dr. Bhatttarai has said that the declaration of autonomous republics is in accordance with the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 and is for creating the people’s pressure to offset the tendency of other political parties retaining a unitary state.

Meanwhile, in a regular meeting with the officiating Prime Minister Bijya gacchedar, President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has asked Deputy Prime Minister Bijya Gacchedar what sorts of actions the government has taken to stop the Maoists from declaring autonomous republics, and has shown his serious concern about it.
