August 24, 2013: poultry farmers and police came to blows in Bhaktapur yesterday when the poultry farmers try to padlock the Department of Livestock demanding the immediate release of the compensation for the chicken and eggs culled after Bhaktapur was declared the bird flu epidemic area, and culled even the healthy chickens and eggs there, and waving of interest taken from the bank for poultry farming, and release of loans immediately for the poultry business.

After the clashes between the poultry farmers and the police, the poultry farmers went to stage a sit-in at the District Administration Office from 1:00 pm chanting different slogans against the government after the talks held between farmers and the Livestock Officials ended inconclusively, according to news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

The Rapid Response Teams deployed by the Department of Livestock Services (DoLS) have culled more than a million chickens at about 500 poultry farms in Bhaktapur in course of the Bird Flu Control Campaign.

Poultry farmers have demanded higher compensation for the chicken and eggs culled than provided by the rules. State officials have said that they have to follow a length process for increasing the compensation for the chickens and eggs culled. However, the government has assured the poultry farmers of taking a look at the rules and regulations.
