The Changing of the Guard At Pashupati in Kathmandu

Issue 01, January 04, 2009

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Sunday, December 28, 2008, Pashupati Area Development Trust accepted the resignations tendered by the South Indian priests working at the shrine to Lord Pashupatinath in Kathmandu and appointed Nepalese priests in their places. The tradition had been that South Indian priests called Bhatta attended the lord for several centuries. They took billions of Nepalese rupees to India according to some guesstimates; they did not use any amount offered to Lord Pashupatinath for improving the shrine and the surrounding areas but pocketed all those religious incomes for their personal uses. So, Nepalis have been voicing for replacing the South Indian priests with Nepalese priests. None of the previous governments listened to the Nepalese people’s voice for the changing of the guard at Lord Pashupatinath. Pashupati Area Development Trust replacing South Indian priests with Nepalis has listened to the people’s voice. It has been the national pride for all nationalist Nepalis to have the Nepalese priests at such prestigious religious shrine.
