Prime Minister Koirala Softening to Maoists’ Demand

Nepalnews.com mk Oct 20 07 reported that talking to the reporters in his hometown Biratnagar before flying back to the capital on Saturday morning, October 20, Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala said that he was ready to accept the commitment proposal for declaring Nepal a republic by the Interim legislature to be endorsed by the constituent assembly after its election but was opposed to the proportional voting system. Prime Minister Koirala hinted that the Maoists’ proposal for adopting the proportional representation system would not be accepted by the NC under any circumstances.

The CPN-Maoist along with two other small CPNs had petitioned the Interim Head of State and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala for calling a special session of the Interim Legislature for discussing two main issues such as declaring Nepal a republic and adopting a proportional representation system, and submitted the proposal for declaring Nepal a republic and adopting a proportional representation system. The special session of the Interim legislature would sit on October 29, 2007 for discussing the proposal. The special session was to sit on October 14 to discuss the proposal but postponed to October 16, and again postponed to sit on October 29, 2007 for making the political leaders concerned to celebrate the most important Hindu festival Dashain.
