Ending Impunity Government’s Top Priority Says Prime Minister

Issue 50, December 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 10, 2009, speaking at a function held by the National Human Rights Commission to mark the 61st International Human Rights Day, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that the government has given a top priority to the protection and promotion of human rights in Nepal, and to the ending of impunity.

This statement proves that how far the Prime Minister could go telling a lie to the people. He has not taken any actions to the group of policemen responsible for raping their colleague policewoman Suntali Dhami working at the police station in the Accham district of far western Nepal; instead he has put the victim of the police gang rape at the police hospital in Kathmandu virtually in custody in the name of treatment. Women activists have continued to protest the government for not taking actions against the rapists.

Similarly, the government has not taken any actions against the Minister of State Karima Begam for slapping the Chief District Officer of the Bara District.

The armed police have killed five unarmed landless people staying on in the fallow land in the Kailali district. Instead of taking actions against the responsible persons for taking the lives of the people, Home Minister Bhim Rawal has appreciated the police for taking the lives of the people.

The police have not arrested the culprits responsible for assaulting on the woman reporter Tika Bista in Rukum on Monday, December 7, 2009. Nepalese reporters have been staging sit-ins at the district headquarters across the country demanding the strong action against the perpetrators of violence against the reporter but the government has not done anything so far except for the Prime Minister visiting reporter Tika Bista at the hospital in Kathmandu and promising to pay the medical bills for her.
