Airlifting of Trekkers Stranded At Lukla Started

Issue 46, November 13, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 6, 2011: helicopters have airlifted more than 200 trekkers stranded at Lukla from Surke about 45 minutes walking distance from Lukla. A plan on making 35 flights on Saturday, November 5 could not be materialized, as none of the flights could take off due to the bad weather, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

Due to the bad weather, the private airlines have been making huge losses because they could not make any flight to Lukla and back to Kathmandu. All the private airlines will make as many flights as possible to Lukla to bring back the trekkers stranded at Lukla. However, the weather continues to be deteriorating.

Still about 2,000 trekkers at Lukla and 600 trekkers at Surke are waiting for the return flight to Kathmandu. Most of them have missed the return flights to their home countries.
