Issue 42, October 16, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 10, 2011: Gov. Jerry Brown of California on Saturday has signed off the legislation known as the California Dream Act making thousands of students illegally attending public colleges will be eligible to receive state financial aid to attend public colleges according to the news posted on Sfgate and other news websites.

The California Dream Act - AB131 takes effect in 2013, but needed to be approved by the UC regents that are expected to support the measure. However, opponents favoring stricter immigration laws will try to block the Act through a referendum on next year's ballot.

Undocumented students have cheered the Act that makes them eligible for financial aid to attend the state's public colleges and universities.

The California Student Aid Commission has said that 5,462 undocumented students in the state will be eligible for a financial aid. It will cost the state more than $13 million.
