Nepalese Christians Lost Burial Site

Issue 05, January 30, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 27, 2011: Nepalese Christians have lost their burial ground after Hindus refuse to allow them to bury Christians in the holy forest area called Shleshmantak of Hindus at Gaushala in Kathmandu. Nepalese Christians have said that they will have no alternative to parade corpses on the streets of Kathmandu if the government does not find alternative burial grounds for them to bury their dead.

The Shleshmantak forest area has been the burial ground for Nepalese Christians until the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT): an agency for managing the Pashupati temple decided to tear down some structures including 200-grave sites of Christians, Muslims, Rais, and Limbus in the Shelshmantak forest to meet the criteria of UNESCO for making the area the heritage site.

The Ministry of Culture washes its hands of the decision made by the PADT on tearing down all the structures in the Shleshmantak forest area saying the PADT is an independent body and the government has no role to play in it; the Shleshmantak area is within the purview of the PADT.
