Devastating Floods In Nepal

KTM Metro Reporter

August 12, 2017

Kathmandu: Floods in Nepal have devastated the lives in the flatland called Terai and in some hills causing death of 33 people, and snapped the electricity, communication networks, and put even the East-West Highway under one-meter-water level bringing the vehicular traffic in most of the southern areas to a halt. Airports have been under water, too causing the suspension of air services in those areas.

Except Dharan, most of the areas in the Sunsari district including some areas of Biratnagar have been under water. Narayani River has risen by more than one meter. Mugling-Narayangad Road has been totally closed making vehicles to stop at Mugling to the north and Narayangad to the south.

Most of the areas in Terai districts have been under water. Some houses mostly made of mud and unbaked bricks have collapsed. Some families have taken shelter on the rooftops; others have taken shelter in the nearby schools.

Prime Minster Sher Bahadur Deuba in a video posted on his facebook expressed his sorrow for the sufferings of the floods victims, and he promised to help the flood victims alleviate their sufferings.

Prime Minister Deuba and Home Minister Janardan Sharma have sent the army, armed police force and Nepal police to rescue the floods victims trapped in their houses and other buildings to the safe areas.

They used raft, motorboats, boats and other whatever means are available to reach the people trapped in houses and rescue them. They took with them ready-to-eat food items sufficient for three days to feed the flood victims.

At the request of Home Minister Janardan Sharma, Foreign Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara urged the Indian ambassador to open up the dams made on Koshi, Gandaki and Rapti rivers so that the floods would not do additional damages to lives and property of Nepalese, the news in “gorkhapatra” of today stated.
