UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon’s Nepal Visit

On the evening of Friday, October 31, 2008, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon arrived in Kathmandu from New Delhi, India on his first trip to Nepal. Minister for Foreign Affairs Upendra Yadav and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Hisila Yami received the UN Secretary General at the International Airport in Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon released a statement (Given in a separate news item).
UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon held a meeting with Prime Minister Prachanda at Singhdurbar on Friday evening. They talked about the ongoing peace process in Nepal. Prime Minister Prachanda expressed gratitude for the UN's role in the peace process in Nepal.
Then, the UN General Secretary attended the banquet hosted by Prime Minister Prachanda at Hotel Yak and Yeti in Kathmandu in honor of the visiting dignitary. In his speech in reply to the Prime Minister’s request for continuing the UN assistance for Nepal, the UN General Secretary said that the UN would continue its assistance for reconstruction in Nepal.
On Saturday Morning, November 01, 2008, the UN General Secretary took a Mountain View flight on board the helicopter of the Nepal Army, and then met with the first President of Nepal, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala, General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist Jhalanath Khanal, and Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav. Then, he held an interaction with the members of the Constituent Assembly and told them that the serious challenge to Nepal is merging the People’s Liberation Army with the Nepali Army, concluding the peace process to a logical end, and crafting a new constitution. Thereafter, he held a press conference in which a large number of media people were present.
He flew to Lumbini in southern Nepal to visit the birthplace of Gautam Buddha on the way to Bangladesh later in the afternoon of Saturday, November 01, 2008.
