U.S. Under-Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero

Issue 48, November 25, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 18, 2012: U.S. Under-Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero arrived Kathmandu yesterday night for a three-day official visit, and called on Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai at the Singha Durbar Secretariat today, and inquired about the current political situation in Nepal, elections to a new CA, and a political consensus, according to the state-run news agency RSS.

Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai in turn informed U.S Under Secretary of State Otero that the government has made efforts on setting the date for holding the elections to a new CA in consultation with the opposition parties.

U.S Under Secretary of State Otero also talked about the Bhutanese and Tibetan refugees in Nepal. Even after the US has airlifted 63,000 Bhutanese refugees to its country following the Third Country Resettlement Program, Nepal has still a number of Bhutanese refugees languishing in Eastern Nepal. The US has been concerned very much with the Government of Nepal not allowing the Tibetan refugees in Nepal to hold even peaceful rallies to protest against the Chinese rule in Tibet.

U.S Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero also called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today. Talking briefly to the reporters after the meeting, Foreign Minister Shrestha said that U.S Under Secretary of State Otero expressed concern about the current political situation in Nepal, new elections, Bhutanese and Tibetan refugees among others, writes RSS/thehimalayantimes.com.
