Nepal: Meeting Place Of Commodities Of two Super States

August 19, 2013: Nepal has been the meeting place of commodities of two super states such as China and India. Various manufactured goods and agricultural products (recently) have been competing in the Nepalese market. The recent trend in the Kathmandu market is customers have the choice of buying Chinese or Indian made goods. Chinese goods are cheap but with a questionable quality and durability. Fake goods with the labels of both the countries also are available in plenty in the Kathmandu market.
Recently, Kathmandu has faced the shortage of onions. Consequently, the price of onions went through the roof. Nepal imports a large quantity of onions from India. According to the Nepalese media, the heavy rains have destroyed the onion crops in India. So, the shortage of onions has been. But the reality might be India sent the onions to the countries that paid high prices.
The prices of onions tripled in Nepal within two weeks. The price of onion went from Rs 40 per kilogram to Rs 120 per kilogram. The current reporter knew that the highest price of onion was once Rs 75 per kilogram. Then, most of the customers stopped buying onions.
According to the news in the last but one page of ‘gorkhapatra’ of today, 40 tons of onions from China and 50 tons of onions from India entered the vegetable market at Kalimati in Kathmandu a few days ago bringing the prices of onion down to Rs 70 per kilogram of Chinese onions, and Rs 80 kilogram of Indian onions.
The news also stated that Nepalese customers have not been used to the taste of the Chinese onions so they prefer Indian onions. However, restaurants and hotels have preferred Chinese onions.
Kathmandu has different vegetables that go with the identity of Chinese. Nepalis have been used to the taste of these vegetables. So, they will soon adopt the taste of onions, too.
