Governments Not Seriously Follow Rule of Law

Issue 51, December 20, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 15, 2009, presenting details of the Kailali incident and assault on reporter Tika Bista at the meeting of Legislature Committee on International Relations and Human Rights, members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) have said that one government after another formed after the restoration of democracy in the country misinterpreted the rule of law and withdrew the cases filed against the culprits instead of taking actions against them according to the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of December 16, 2009.

Stating the Kailali incident was a preplanned one; members of the NHRC stressed the need for the political parties to be cautious not to repeat such incidents again. They have said that the political parties have been charging and counter charging each other attempting to cover up their involvement in the Kailali incident.

NHRC has accused the government of neglecting the rule of law by withdrawing the rights violation cases of serious nature stating the government has taken up only 34 cases out of the 303 cases the NHRC has recommended for the government to take actions. It indicates the government’s seriousness in curbing the human rights violence in the country.
