US Under-secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman In Nepal

April 5, 2012: on a two-day official visit to Nepal, US Department of State Under-secretary for Political Affairs Wendy R. Sherman has arrived in Kathmandu yesterday. Her Nepal visit is the part of the regular South Asian Countries visit. She has come to Nepal after her visit to India, and she is going to Bangladesh after completing her visit to Nepal.

At the meeting with the US Under Secretary at his office in Singhadurbar, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has urged Wendy R. Sherman to increase the U.S. investment in Nepal.

Prime Minister's press advisor Ram Rijhan Yadav told reporters quoting Prime Minister Bhattarai that the country will move forward to the economic development after the twin tasks of the peace process and constitution-drafting is completed, and the US cooperation to that end is indispensable, ‘Thehimalayantimes.com’ writes.

Emerging from the meeting, State Under-Secretary Sherman has said that she has confidence in getting a final shape of the ongoing peace process and constitution-drafting soon, as she is impressed with the development of the peace process and the constitution writing. She also said, “Nepal's future lies only on democracy.”

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman said she talked with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai about Tibetan refugees' demands for documents that would entitle them to rights according to the AFP news. Many of the thousands of Tibetan refugees living in Nepal complain the government of Nepal not issuing them proper papers to enabling them to travel, seek employment or have their children attend public schools.

US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy R Sherman met with chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda, Chief of Army Staff General Chhatraman Sing Gurung, representatives of the Tibetan community and civil society leaders yesterday, ‘Thehimalayantimes.com’ reports. She discussed the issues of peace and constitution drafting at the meeting with Prachanda. She noted the improved relations between America and the Maoist party, and anticipates further improvement after the completion of the peace process.
