June 10, 2010: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has welcomed the decision of the Government of Nepal on extending the United Nations’ Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) in Nepal on June 09, 2010 according to the UN News Service.
On June 06, 2010, the Council of Ministers has decided to extend the term of UNOHCHR in Nepal for a year. The Council of Ministers has also decided to shut down the regional offices of the UNOHCHR in Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Dhangadi.
Leaders of the NC and CPN-UML have suggested the government to shut down these regional offices erroneously believing the UNOHCHR has been supporting the UCPN-Maoist whereas the European countries and the US have lobbied for extending the term of UNOHCHR.
On June 10, 2010 in a press statement released by the US Embassy in Kathmandu, the United States has welcomed the extension of the term of the UNOHCHR stating it plays an important role in promoting and protecting human rights by investigating allegations of abuses and working with the National Human Rights Commission and other Nepali human rights institutions. "We look forward to continuing to work with OHCHR in support of its mandate to promote and protect the human rights of all Nepalis."
The UN has set up the UNOHCHR in Nepal in 2005 to monitor and report on human rights, monitor the enforcement of the Comprehensive Peace Accord of 2006 reached between the Government of Nepal and the Maoists ending the decade-long civil war that claimed some 13,000 lives.
Under the new deal reached with the Government of Nepal, UNOHCHR will continue to enjoy unrestricted freedom of movement and will continue to exercise its mandate throughout the country with access to all sectors of government and to all official documentation.
UNOHCHR also continues its cooperation with the National Human Rights Commission and other national human rights institutions as part of its mandate on building up civil society organizations’ ability to strengthen the national human rights protection system in Nepal.
