Former Secretary To Home Ministry Convicted Of Corruption

Issue 41, October 7, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 4, 2012: review-hearing on the corruption case filed by the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), a division bench of Justices such as Om Prakash Mishra , Gauri Bahadur Karki, and Kedar Prasad Chalise of the Special Court today convicted former Secretary to Ministry of Home Padma Prasad Pokharel of embezzling the state fund, sentenced him to 18-month jail and imposed the penalty of Rs 5.85 million.

The office of secretary to any ministry is the senior most civil administration position in Nepal. Even retired such civil servants command high honor in the Nepalese society but some of them turn out to be corrupt, and disgrace such highly honorable civil administration position.

Previously, the Special court had acquitted Mr. Pokharel but the CIAA appealed the Supreme Court of Nepal for reviewing the case against Pokharel stating the ruling of the Special Court was flawed, so it needed review. The Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the Special Court to review the case.
