The state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of August 20, 2009 under the title ‘Continuity of Tradition of Bringing and Putting up a Pole’ has stated that the government agency called ‘Guthi Sanstha’ responsible for managing all cultural and religious activities has sent the record of the jewelry belonging to Akash Bhairava in Kathmandu to the Library of Tribhuvan University for keeping the record safe and the jewelry to the State Bank of Nepal called Nepal Rastra Bank for safe deposit. According to the valuation done by the Nepal Rastra Bank, the jewelry is valued at US $ 100,000 (one hundred thousand) in the international market. The then King Gyanendra took the jewelry from the Nepal Rastra Bank and he never returned it to the Nepal Rastra Bank.
The tradition has it that the bust of the Akash Bhairava is opened to the public only once a year during the nine-day Indra jatra festival held in Bhadra (August-September). During these days the attendants decorated the Akash Bhairava with jewelry. However, Gyanendra Shah grabbing the jewelry during his rule and not returning it to the concerned agency has made the God without jewelry.
