Indian Army in Nepalese Soil

Issue 41, October 14, 2007

BY KTM Metro Reporter

On Monday, October 08, 2007, in an interview with the BBC Nepali Service, retired Major General Ashok Mehata said if the Nepali Army could not tackle the situation in case of the armed conflict with the Maoists then the Indian Army could go in to help the Nepali Army.

On Tuesday, October 09, 2007, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu explained that it was his personal view not of the Indian Government.

The Indian government had already learned a lesson from sending the army to Srilanka to put the rebels under control. The Indian Army could do nothing to stop the rebels’ activities but the Indian Army paid a high price for sending its troops to foreign land. Former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi also paid the price for sending the Indian troops to Srilanka with his life. Obviously, the retired Major General had ignored those historical facts.

After the statement of the President of BJP Rajnath Sing, Ashok Mehata’s remark was a second in succession in a week’s time. The Nepalese king must have used his huge assets amassed during the 238-year dynastic rule for buying the opinions of the foreign influential personalities and sending them to Nepal probably believing to reverse the current political tendency. It indicates that the king is still active in the Nepalese politics probably hopes to take back the power lost to the Nepalese people.
