Investigation Into Encroachment On Fewa Lake Areas

August 25, 2013: Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has started investigating the areas encroached by some unscrupulous people on the bank of the Fewa Lake. A five-member team of CIAA led by joint secretary Kirshna Prasad Dhungana has reached Pokhara to check the areas encroached by some people. During the visit, they will acquire information about the current and past situation of the lake and the total land encroached by the locals, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.

 

The team also will probe into the actual areas of the Fewa Lake. According to CIAA, the team will prepare a report on the encroachers, situation of lakes and ponds and the total area of land encroached by the locals.

 

Former president of Pokhara City Development Committee Bishwo Prakash Lamichane said that 7,000 hectors of land has been encroached. He has said that the lake is spread over 21,000 hectors but the land has been shrunk to 9,955.

 

Former coordinator of the lake conservation committee formed during the government led by Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that the Harpan khola: the main stream flowing to the lake dumps 120,000 metric tons of pebbles, sands and silt into the lake every year. He said that the three-kilometer of the Harpan khola has been submerged forming part of the Fewa Lake.

 

The team will carry out a field investigation into eight lakes then it recommends what to do next to preserve these lakes, and urges the concerned State authority to take actions against the culprits.
