Finally Musharraf Goes

Issue 34, August 24, 2008

By KTM Metro reporter in Kathmandu

On August 18, 2008, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan bowed down to the people’s demand for getting rid of him and resigned from the position of President. He took the power from elected Prime Minister Nawaz Shariff in 1999, and exiled the elected Prime minister to Saudi Arabia for eight years. Pakistan Muslim League of Nawaz Shariff and Pakistan People’s Party of Bhutto have been orchestrating to impeach the president if he did not resign from the position.

His position was severely weakened after he fired the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and many other judges, and then installed his crony as the Chief Justice to legalize his illegal election for another five-term of the presidency in 2007. After the parliamentary election held in February 2008, Musharraf became a lame-duck president.

The Pakistani Muslim League leader, Nawaz Shariff wanted to impeach the president for treason that carries a death sentence if it is proved.

After the announcement of the resignation of President Musharraf, the Stock exchange in Pakistan heated up and the value of Pakistani rupee went up.
