Quake Aid Efforts In Haiti

January 15, 2010: Haitians have spent the third night under the open sky. The Tuesday morning quake has destroyed a large number of buildings including the presidential palace and parliamentary building, and disrupting all sorts of telecommunications causing untold sufferings to Haitians. The Red Cross has estimated about 50,000 people have died in Haiti due to the Tuesday morning’s earthquake that has devastated Haiti. Search and rescue teams have been working day and night but time has been running out to save ten of thousands of people buried under the rubbles.

The Chinese rescue team has landed on Thursday morning. US President Barack Obama has committed to provide Haiti with $100 million in aid immediately; and has said that many more would follow. US Hospital ship is heading to Haiti.

 “This is a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share,” Mr. Obama said, speaking in the morning at the White House diplomatic reception room with Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. on his side.

Aid agencies have said they would help Haitians in all possible ways and means. The World Food Program has 90 tons of high-energy biscuits flown to Haiti from El Salvador. The United Nations is freeing up $10 million in emergency relief money, the European Union has pledged $4.4 million and Doctors Without Borders are setting up clinics in tents to treat the injured people. Similarly, many other nations have been preparing for sending their teams and resources to Haiti for mitigating the sufferings of the Haitians at the time of this national catastrophe.
