Reaching Hetauda From Kathmandu In An Hour

Issue 27, July 1, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 26, 2012: Chairman of Nepal Purbadhar Bikas Company Limited (NPBCL) Kush Kumar Joshi said that with the completion of the construction of the 50-km-long Kathmandu-Kulekhani-Hetauda Highway with three-kilometer tunnel between Bhimphedi and Kulekhani in the Makawanpur district, people from Kathmandu can reach Hetauda within an hour. It will save Rs. 7 billion worth of the current fuel consumption. Once the highway comes into operation, the planned four-lane tunnel highway can take a daily traffic of 6,000 vehicles.

Currently, two to three alternative routes are available to travel to Hetauda from Kathmandu; all of them take around 7-8 hours. Currently, people traveling to Hetauda have to take either the 133-km long Tribhuvan Highway or the 227-km long Kathamndu-Mugling-Hetauda route.

The NPBCL is undertaking the construction of this highway following the concept of ‘4Ps’: Public, Private and People Partnership. The people living along the highway can also invest in the project. The total cost of the project is estimated around Rs. 20 billion. The 3-km long tunnel alone costs Rs 10 billion.

The NPBC shareholders include the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Federation of Contractors Association of Nepal, Non-resident Nepalis, and 50,000 locals from 26 village development committees of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Makawanpur districts. The locals would invest Rs 10,000 each in the project, according to the company. (Source: The Rising Nepal of June 26, 2012)
