Speed Up Integration Of Armies Says UNMIN Chief
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
May 15, 2010: speaking at a press conference held in Kathmandu on Friday, May 14, 2010, UNMIN Chief Karen Landgren has said that the Security Council (SC) is concerned very much with the delay in building consensus on extending the term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) and with the stalled peace process that has to be completed with the integration of the two armies into a single army.
Miss Landgren has said that the SC has met on May 5 to reflect on the report of the UN Secretary-General on the Nepal's peace process and the work of the UNMIN; the SC has called the Government of Nepal and the UCPN-Maoist to take the full advantage of UNMIN’s expertise and readiness to help the parties concerned in building consensus on the political problems within its mandate, and to support the peace process.
She has said that she has informed the SC that UNMIN had long warned of a dangerous slide in the peace process with the delay in promulgating the constitution, and on integrating and rehabilitating the Maoist army personnel in the political climate of mistrust. In its Resolution, the SC has shown its concern over the political deadlock, and called on all sides to work on the consensus politics.
She has appreciated both the government and the Maoists for their considerable restraint on not resorting to using forces and violence during the indefinite shutdown enforced by the Maoists and for calling-off of the Maoist-enforced indefinite shutdown. She has said the call-off of the indefinite shutdown has been a step forward to an environment conducive to building consensus politics but the concerned parties have to capitalize on this matter, yet. She has also said that the SC has been concerned with the lack of consensus on extending the term of the CA.
