Illegal Dealings Between Forest Officers And Smugglers

Issue 28, July 11, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 9, 2010: the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of July 08, 2010 has reported that the Forest Officer and the timber mafia in the Banke district have held illegal dealings to register the state-owned forest as the community forest to cut more trees than allowed by the state causing loss of millions of rupees worth of trees; consequently, deforestation has been in a large scale in the district as found by the legislative Natural Resources Sub-committee when its members made a field visit to the district. Members of the Sub-committee have found that Rs. 600 million worth of community forest products have been exported abusing the district forest rules and regulations during the last seven months.

The government has put a total ban on cutting trees for some months following the reports that rampant smuggling of timbers and deforestation across the nation has been taking place; however, the government has not stopped the smugglers and corrupt officers in cutting down trees in the Banke forests states ‘The Rising Nepal’.

Nepalis cannot anticipate more than such things from the Madhav Government that bullied the rule of law for the benefits of Prime Minister, his ministers, their relatives and sycophants during the last thirteen months.
