No Forces Can Stop Elections

May 15, 2013: speaking to the leaders of 29 small political parties out of the 33 political parties headed by the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya at his office yesterday, Chairman of Interim Election Council of Minister Khil Raj Regmi said that no forces could stop the government from holding elections. Leaders of the 29 small parties had gone to meet Chairman Regmi demanding to remove the requirement of 10,000 signatures for registering a political party at the Election Commission for the purpose of the elections, remove the threshold of votes for the proportional representation, and bring back the teams of staffs distributing citizenship certificates in villages and districts, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.
Chairman Regmi said to the leaders of the small political parties that he had taken the note of the demands they had put forward but all these demands could be addressed only consulting with the concerned agencies. Thus, Chairman Regmi had indirectly rejected the demands of the small political parties.
Chairman Regmi has instructed all the state agencies not to grant any leave to the staffs, and prepare the lists of staffs that would go for working on elections and that would not go for working on elections. Chairman Regmi showed his determination to hold elections.
Chairman Regmi had met with the Chairman of the CPN-UML and its leaders as the process of discussing the election issues with the political leaders. At the meeting, the CPN-UML leaders suggested Chairman Regmi not to set the election date without resolving the legal and technical problems of elections whereas leaders of other political parties such as NC, UCPN-Maoist and UDMF had been demanding the announcement of the election date without delay.
Opening the convention of the area number two of the Sindhupalchok NC in Chautara yesterday, President of NC Sushil Koirala said that the elections would be held in November this year; the NC was a responsible party so it was the savior of the nation, people and democracy; none could run a dictatorial rule in the country; the NC had been keeping its policy and principles, so, it did not need to bow down its head in shame, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.
