Cold Waves Taking Nepalese Lives

Issue 02, January 13, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 10, 2013: cold waves across the Terai areas of Nepal have been taking the lives of the poor people. They are so poor that they don’t have even a blanket or firewood to keep them warm during the night. They wear very thin linen to cover their bodies. At night, it is not enough to keep their body heat from losing; consequently, the cold waves take the lives of the weakest persons. More than 50 lives have gone, and continue to follow some of lives.

The Finance Minister Barhaman Pun of the Bhattarai government has announced that his ministry is distributing one blanket to each person in the Terai ares. Obviously, the words of distributing blankets have reached the people but the blankets have not. So, people continue to live in cold and waiting for the state-sponsored blankets to come to save them.

Nepal has three major climatic zones such the Himalaya, Mid-hills, and Terai. The Himalaya is the coldest areas where heavy snowfalls keep the people home for days but none of them loses life, as they know how to keep warm even in the snow-covered areas. The mid-hills have very mild winter and summer. So, the healthiest areas in Nepal are the mid-hills. They have the houses build suitable to both the winter and summer seasons. However, the Terai area has only one or two months of winter season. So, the people are not prepared for such cold waves. Their houses are built for the hot summer season. So, the house could not keep them warm.
