Clean Chit to Former Governor

Issue 29, July 19, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 15, 2009, the Supreme Court of Nepal has rule to give a clean chit to former Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Bank of Nepal) Bijayanath Bhattarai and Departmental Head Surendra Man Pradhan both indicted by the Special Court for corruption.

If you take a look at the past rulings of the Supreme Court of Nepal you will find that the Supreme Court of Nepal had terminated the corruption cases filed by the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority against the Nepali Congress Leaders such as Khum Bahadur Khadka and Govinda Raj Joshi, and Rastriya Prjatantra Party Leader Rabindranath Sharma on a technical ground just before the declaration of the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.

Just to remind the readers that President of Nepal Bar Association Biswokanta Mainali had once publicly said that an appointment to the judge means a license to corruption. This issue became a showdown for the justices of the Supreme Court of Nepal and the Nepal Bar Association members.

The full bench of the Supreme Court of Nepal had ruled to bar President Mainali from practicing as a lawyer for six months but later on annulled the ruling after the tremendous pressure put on the Supreme Court by the members of the Nepal Bar Association with the support of the public in general.
