Opening An Ancient Store Of Treasures

Issue 14, April 7, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

April 5, 2013: ancient kings and prime ministers had made a store of valuables at the ancient palace complex called Hanumandhoka Durbar. Nobody knew what the royalties had kept in it. Nobody had dared to open it. Concerning one empty storage room, a former palace employee had heard that former King Gyanendra had taken out valuables from it, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

The government headed by Dr. Baburam Bhattarai had decided to open it. The Department of Archeology had set up a committee comprising almost all concerned state agencies, public agencies and people to open the ancient treasury following the decision of the Council of Ministers.

The state employees opening the doors of the treasury took six hours to cut all the ancient locks yesterday. They found a large number of archeologically important items. They have found scattered silver bullions, and a head of Buddha covered by dust in the treasury.

They found 11 containers of 12’ high and quite wide. The containers must have been put in there before building a store of treasures, as the doors are very small for them to go in. They have not opened these containers.

They have sealed all the doors they opened yesterday. The Nepal Army has been giving security to the treasury.
