Issue 51, December 16, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 11, 2012: The British Government today announced US$5.7 million contribution to the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF) to be provided through the UK Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) for implementing the provisions made in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement including support for the grassroots peace building initiatives, conflict-affected communities and future elections, according the press statement issued by the British embassy in Kathmandu, writes nepalnews.com.

Head of DFID Nepal Dominic O’Neill said, “Consolidating and building peace in Nepal is a key priority for the Government of Nepal and for the international community, including the UK. These funds underline our on-going commitment to work alongside the Government to help establish peace and stability in Nepal and to build a platform for the kind of longer term development which will improve the lives of Nepal’s citizens.”

Last year also the UK had provided $5.3 million of MDRI funds as a contribution to the government of Nepal for rural electrification and hydropower development in Nepal; bringing access to electricity can radically transform the quality of life of people living in rural communities and it demonstrates the huge potential that Nepal has to meet its own energy needs in an environmentally sustainable way, according the press statement.
