Violence Against Women Continues In Nepal

Issue 30, July 28, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 25, 2013: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been seriously concerned with the brutal assault on a Dalit woman of Belbari, Morang district for complaining against the perpetrator of an attempted rape, according to the RSS news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

In a statement, the NHRC informed that its regional office in Biratnagar was conducting an investigation into the incident and its report would be made public at the earliest. NHRC has said that the police have issued an arrest warrant to seven people involved in the crime and six of them have been arrested.

Chairperson of National Women's Commission (NWC) Sheikh Chandtara has said that the victims of violence against women lack access to justice due to the lack of victim-friendly environment, according to the RSS news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

Some women activists blamed the police for shutting the door to women victims for filing complaints and FIRs. They also said that the police had its own format for registering complaints on violence against women (VAW) and its own analysis, which prevented the victims from having access to justice.
