October 3, 2012: a three-member bench of judges such as Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise today convicted Rabindra Nath Sharma: former leader of Rastriya Prajatantra Party of amassing Rs 49.5 million by corrupt means while he held the portfolio of Ministry of Finance in the past. Mr. Sharma died four years ago.
The ruling of the Special Court indicated that corrupt ministers could not escape from conviction even after their death. The Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a corruption case against Sharma at the Special Court, accusing him of amassing Rs 49.5 million disproportionately high to his sources of income he could earn from the regular job.
Deceased Sharma was the fifth former minister convicted of corruption and sent to jail after high profile former ministers and NC leaders such as Khum Bahadur Khadka, Chiranjivi Wagle, JP Gupta and Govinda Raj Joshi, writes nepalnews.com
Sharma had deposited the illegally earned money in the names of his relative’s wife Saroj Sharma, son Sarad Kumar Gyawali, daughter-in-law Aruna Gyawali, Saileja Sharma Gyawali and Swastika Sharma, according to ‘THT ONLINE’.
