Republic Day Celebration

The government of Nepal has celebrated the first anniversary of Republic Day on May 29, 2009. President Ram Baran Yadav flanked by Vice-president Permananda Jha and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has watched the various cultural and other parades at the parade ground from the Nepal Army platform in Kathmandu. Speaker Subhas Chandra Nemwang and Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi are also present at the function.
None of the members of opposition parties are seen in the platform; even the Nepali Congress leaders are conspicuously absent in the celebration of the first anniversary of Republic Day at the Nepal Army platform.
At the end of the function, Prime Minister Nepal has delivered a brief speech and has said in his speech that leaders of all political parties need to cooperate on writing a new constitution and in the peace process; he also has cautioned all concerned that if the confrontation of the political parties continues then the writing of a new constitution and the peace process will be at risk.
The Maoists have celebrated the first anniversary of Republic Day differently. They have taken out a rally and then have converted it into a mass meeting at the Gadhibaithak Square in Kathmandu. Speaking at the meeting, former Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has stated that Third People’s Movement will be launched starting off at the parliament and on the street to set up the suzerainty of people.
On the occasion of the first anniversary of Republic Day, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has laid a foundation stone of the ‘Monument to Republic’ at Ratna Park in Kathmandu.
