Maoists’ Tea Party At Bhrikuti Mandap In Kathmandu

Issue 43, October 25, 2009

By Kathmandu Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On October 20, 2009, leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist) have held a tea party for all political leaders, civil society leaders, state employees such as army, police and civil officials and foreign diplomats on the occasion of celebrating Nepal Samvat 1130 and on the occasions of other festivals such as Dashain and Tihar mostly the Hindus celebrate.

All top leaders of all political parties except for President of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Prime Minister Madhav Nepal have attended the tea party. President Koirala could not attend the tea party because of his fragile health whereas Prime Minster Madhav Nepal did not attend the tea party because he received the invitation not as the Prime Minster but as the leader of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML). Maoists have not recognized him as the Prime Minister, yet.

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda, Senior Leader Mohan Vaidya ‘Kiran’ and Deputy Chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattarai have welcomed the guests at Bhrikuti Mandap in Kathmandu. Later on, Chairman Prachanda flanked by Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal and Acting President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala is seen at the tea party.

Chairman Prachanda said, “Our objective is not of blaming the President and removing him from the position but we want to move forward following the values and principles of the Interim Constitution; we need to amend the Interim Constitution if it has been distorted” according to the news published in the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of October 21, 2009.

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Jhalanath Khanal has said that his party would be flexible to the maximum possible extent for the consensus politics and would like to talk about the consensus politics.

Acting President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala has said that his party is ready to talk about anything for reaching the consensus politics except for blaming the President.

The Maoists have been blaming the President for the unconstitutional move on directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff and ordering him to stay on in the job overturning the decision of the then Prime Minister Prachanda on firing the Army Chief for indiscipline.

All democratic minded Nepalis believe that the President’s move on directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff is unconstitutional and undemocratic. If Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda compromises on not blaming the President not to mention taking actions against him for his undemocratic move on directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff negotiating with the leaders of the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress behind closed doors, it will hit hard on all democratic minded Nepalis and Prachanda will join the pantheon of the corrupt politicians for whom power is the only concern not for democracy and welfare of the people.
