Saga Of Shyam Sharan’s Visit To Nepal

Issue 33, August 15, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 10, 2010, the legislative Committee on International Relations and Human Rights has served a subpoena to Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and his Deputy Sujata Koirala to inquire them about the visit of former Foreign Secretary Shyam Sharan to Nepal as a special envoy of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh without informing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Sharan has not only failed to inform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about his visit to Nepal but also even to inform the Ministry about his meeting with the Prime Minister and the President. So, it is not surprising that the official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is no longer needed if such things go on.

During the hearing, Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala has admitted that her ministry has no information about the visit of the Indian envoy. Legislators have told her that the visit of the Indian envoy without informing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs means the breach of diplomatic norms and values; it indicates that the Indian authorities don’t care of honoring and respecting the Nepalese Foreign Ministry.

Concerning the death threats coming from a person called Subrata Das allegedly serving at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to the Maoist legislator, Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala has said that the Indian embassy has said the allegation is baseless in reply to the clarification sought by her ministry.
