Extension Of Term Of Constituent Assembly

Issue 19, May 08, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 5, 2011: leaders of the UCPN-Maoist and CPN-UML have agreed in principle to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly, as it will not be able to promulgate a new constitution by May 28, 2011 following all the procedures.

Nepalis had elected the Constituent Assembly for two years on April 10, 2008 to write a new constitution and promulgate it but it could not do so last year so, its members had extended its term for a year until May 28, 2011 to complete the writing and promulgation of a new constitution.

The subject-matter committees have completed their work on drafting their concerned sections of a new constitution, and submitted those things to the Constitution Assembly that in turn has passed them and sent them to the Constitutional Committee responsible for a final draft of a new constitution.

A new constitution is ready except for a few sections the political leaders need to agree on. Then, they can take the draft constitution to the people for the feedback from the people. Now, it is up to the political leaders to complete the process of writing a new constitution.
