Issue 39, September 27, 2009

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 22, 2009, Joint Secretary to Nepalese Ministry of Finance Kapil Dev Ghimire and Mission Director of U.S. Agency for International Development in Nepal (USAID/N) Dr. Kevin A. Rushing have signed the agreement on the US providing Nepal with $205 millions for five years. The total assistance per annum comes to $41 millions.

Out of $205 millions, $82.5 millions will be spent on health care, $56.5 millions on economic program, $ 53 millions on strengthening democracy and governance, $12 millions on peace process, and $1 million on humanitarian relief program during the period of five years.

In 1980s, the USAID/N used to spend about $20 millions per year but the USAID/N doubled its budget to $40 millions for helping the new government brought up by the people’s movement in 1990 but the then Nepal government could not absorb the additional assistance provided.
