Issue 08, February 24, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 22, 2013: the Council of Ministers Yesterday morning made the decision on opening diplomatic missions in Bahrain and Oman in view of the increasing number of Nepalis working in the two countries, according to spokesman for the government Raj Kishore Yadav.

Currently, 30,000 and 50,000 Nepalese have been working in Bahrain and Oman respectively. Nepalese laborers working there have been facing problems of even sending back the bodies of their colleagues accidentally died in these two countries in absence of the Nepalese diplomatic missions in these two countries.

If you have been in the Bahrain airport lounge you would notice that how many Nepalis have been working there. Most of the cleaners, sweepers, restaurant workers, security guards, and security checks were Nepalis there in February 2013 when we were in Bahrain in transit to Kathmandu.

Nepalis working in the Middle East send billions of rupees back home every year. The remittances sent by the Nepalis working abroad comprise 25% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nepal. The foreign currency reserve has been considerably improved by the remittances.
