Nepali Peacekeepers’ Lost Money

Issue 46, November 18, 2007

On November 14, 2007, ‘The Himalayan Times’ reported that former Nepal Army personnel served as peacekeepers in various UN peacekeeping missions decided to stage a rally in front of the UN office in Kathmandu for drawing the attention of the UN officials to get back their about Rs 65 billion what they called “illegally grabbed” by the Nepal Army from their salaries.

Former Nepal Army personnel said that the Nepal Army administration had deducted significant amount of money from their salaries and deposited it in the Army Social Welfare Fund. However, after retirement they did not get a single paisa. So, they went to the Girija administration to complain about it but nobody listened to them.

Spokesperson for the Nepal Army, Ramindra Chhetri said that the Nepal Army had been collecting certain amounts from the salaries of the Nepalese peacekeepers serving in the UN peacekeeping missions and deposited it in the Army Social Welfare Fund with the approval of the Government of Nepal. The Nepal Army had been using the money for various social events.
