Sacred Himalayas For Water, Livelihood And Bio-Cultural Heritages

August 19, 2010: ICIMOD and the Royal Government of Bhutan have jointly held a three-day seminar on ‘Sacred Himalayas For Water, Livelihood And Bio-Cultural Heritages’ in Kathmandu to formulate a roadmap to the proposed ‘Climate Summit for Living Himalayas, Bhutan 2011.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC) of Nepal Dr. Jagadish Chandra Pokharel has appreciated the initiative of the Royal Government of Bhutan for developing a regional framework and national adaptation plans to climate change, and to reduce the vulnerability of local populations’ living in the region, and has also appreciated the role of ICIMOD in providing technical support for the seminar.

High-level professionals from Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and India have been participating in the seminar.

Speaking at the seminar, Minister for Agriculture and Forest of Bhutan Dr. Pema Gyamtsho has said that the concerned countries need to work together on developing medium and long-term regional level strategies for mitigating the problems caused by the climate change, as citizens of the eastern Himalayas as a whole suffer from the natural disasters brought by the climate change.

Nawang Norbu of Bhutan presented the rationale for the proposed ‘Climate Summit for Living Himalayas, Bhutan 2011’ and its links to the process and the rationale for focusing on the southern slopes of the eastern Himalayan region, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of August 19, 2010 reports.
