Four Maoists Join Khanal Government

Issue 10, March 06, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 4, 2011: a team of four including team leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara has joined the Khanal government today. All of them have been sworn in as ministers. Krishna Bahadur Mahara got the portfolio of information and Communication, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi the portfolio of physical planning and works, Barsha Man Pun the portfolio of peace and reconstruction, and Khadga Bahadur Bishwokarma the portfolio of tourism and civil aviation.

Krishna Bahadur Mahara got elevated to Deputy Prime Minister. Now, the cabinet has two deputy prime ministers: one of the UCPN-Maoist and another of CPN-UML. CPN-UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari is deputy prime minister holding the portfolio of Finance.

However, the cabinet has to take a full shape, yet. Prime Minister Khanal needs to allocate portfolios to his two ministers that have remained without portfolios so far. He has to appoint some bodies to minister for defense and minister for home, too. Any person holding the defense portfolio needs to be compatible to the Maoist holding the portfolio of peace and reconstruction so that the peace process moves ahead and completes as soon as possible. The portfolio of home has been the most favored portfolio by all the political parties obviously for using the security forces it holds in the favor of the party of anybody holding the portfolio.

In the past, the NC did not join the Maoist-led government not getting the portfolios of home and defense, and had successfully tore down the government after nine months only to make the most unscrupulous man Madhav Nepal another prime minister making the mockery of democracy.

If Prime Minister Khanal is wise enough he should give either home or defense to the NC and bring the NC to his cabinet and work together to complete the peace process and the writing of a new constitution.

UPCN-Maoist and CPN-UML should not monopolize the entire administration. They should bring in the Madheshi leaders to the cabinet to make it stronger than the past cabinet. However, they cannot ignore the small parties that have neither support of the people nor have any ideology to follow but make only noises in the parliament and in public.
