Rains In Kathmandu and Lowland, Snow In Highland

Issue 01, Janaury 3, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On the night of December 30, 2009, rainfalls in Kathmandu and lowland have disrupted the regular lives of people on December 31, as regular flights could not take place due to the low visibility at various airports in Nepal. Even in the warm Terai areas, people needed to dress in warm heavy clothes due to the cold brought by the winter rainfalls. Temperature even in warm areas has dropped considerably taking unprepared Nepalis for sudden cold by surprise.

More than two-feet snowfalls have been in the highland areas mostly the mid and northern Nepal breaking the communications even among the villagers in some villages. Most of the public transport has come to halt due to the snow on the high hills such as Kharidhunga of the Dolkha District.

In the eastern Nepal, the thick blanket of snow has covered most of the mountain districts such as Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha and Dhankuta. Regular life has been disrupted for most of the villagers. However, some town youths from Biratnagar and Dharan have rushed to Dhankuta to play in the snow according to the local media report.

In Western Nepal, heavy snowfalls have buried hundreds of sheep and highland cows called yak and nak (yak is a bull, nak is a cow) under snow. Farmers do not know whether they will get them alive or not.
